An arcade runs along the front of the building, with cane chairs set out under the arches.
Tea does not have to be taken indoors here, and in the last hour of light it should not be.
Afternoon tea comes up on a two-tier marble stand — pistachio slices, chocolate squares, small tartlets, a few savouries on the lower plate — with the pot brought separately and poured for you.
The floor out there is black and white check, the cushions are printed with flowers in pink and white, and the rail is a run of turned brass. Past it the lawn drops away and the hills close the far side.
