Ask for a table in the pavilion.
It stands off the end of the arcade on slender columns, with a scalloped stone eave running round the outside and a square basin set into the floor at the centre, a jet playing in it. The chairs are wicker and the linen goes over dark wood.
Beyond the rail the ground falls into the formal garden — a long black tank with two fountains in it, clipped hedges down both sides, an avenue of palms, and a white chhatri standing where the lawns meet the water.
It opens at 7, before anything else on the island does, and is still serving at 11 at night. That covers the coffee before the dawn birdwalk at one end and dinner at the other.
