The Mausoleum of Augustus fills the middle of Piazza Augusto Imperatore, a round ruin ringed with cypress trees, and the hotel faces it. The building is Roman stone and straight lines, designed by Vittorio Ballio Morpurgo and built between 1936 and 1938. A line of Latin carved on the south façade says that here the spirit of the Emperor Augustus flies through the air. Il Caffè sets its tables out under the porticoes, and a gelato cart stands to the left of the main door. Inside, the stone gives way to colour and to green, with some 4,500 plants spread through the building. Via del Corso, the Piazza di Spagna and Bvlgari's boutique on Via Condotti are a few minutes away, but go up to the roof first. La Terrazza opens in the evening, and from there the city runs from Villa Medici and Trinità dei Monti to the Tiber and the Janiculum Hill.
In most rooms the colour starts in the bathroom. The marble is red in one room and green or amber in another, chosen to recall Bvlgari's gemstones, and the same shade carries into the fabrics, the lamps and the mosaic roundels set into the bathroom walls. There are 4 of these palettes, all taken from Rome. Some of the roundels are stamped S.Bulgari, 10 Via Condotti, the address of the jeweller's historic shop. Rooms run from 33 to 49 square metres, and suites from 51 to 300. Some look onto the piazza, and some onto Via della Frezza, a small street between Via di Ripetta and Via del Corso with a more intimate feel. The Bvlgari Suite, on the third floor, looks over the Mausoleum of Augustus through 10 tall windows.
Ask the concierge about the Treasure Hunt. It is a day planned around your interests and your pace, through historic ateliers, private residences and cultural institutions, with parts of the hotel worked into the route, and it suits a couple, a family or a group of friends. The concierge also arranges walks through Rome as Bvlgari sees it. Along the way you learn which brooch was drawn from St Peter's Square, which necklace follows the shape of Castel Sant'Angelo, and how the mosaics of the Baths of Caracalla found their way into Bvlgari's jewels.

Il Gelato. The gelato cart on the piazza is open every day from noon until half past 11 at night. Niko Romito directs the flavours and changes them every week, around the classics and Italian sorbetto. It serves anyone walking past, not only guests.
The Library. The Library is on the ground floor, looking onto Via della Frezza. Every book in it is about Rome, its history, architecture, traditions and great figures, and they stand on dark wood shelves Albini designed for Cassina in 1956. Students of the Fine Arts Academy on Via Ripetta may use the collection, the room opens to the public on request, and it can be taken for a private event.
The Interiors. Antonio Citterio and Patricia Viel restored the building's 14,000 square metres and 7 floors over more than 3 years, with some 300 workers on site 7 days a week. They used imperial marble in large blocks of colour, a nod to Bvlgari's roots as a Roman jeweller, and softened the hard lines with rich materials: hand-set marble mosaic roundels, fabrics drawn from Bvlgari motifs, Murano glass and lamps, walls of blown Venetian crown glass, and original 1930s Ginori vases by Gio Ponti. Some 400 of the building's original shutters were restored by the Tuscan artist Rodolfo Lacquaniti as a work of art.

The Bvlgari Suite is 300, on the third floor, with a private kitchen, a bar counter, a dining room and 10 windows onto the Mausoleum of Augustus. It can be joined to the suites beside it.

Giving Back to Rome. The hotel has given more than EUR 1 million to restore the Mausoleum of Augustus and the Ara Pacis Museum, and it looks after the gardens in the piazza. It works with the Torlonia Foundation to preserve its collection of ancient art, and buys organic and local ingredients for its kitchens. Through Save the Children, it hires staff and houses more than 100 people.

Days Out in Rome. Campo Marzio has always been the quarter of artists and artisans, and a walk with the concierge takes you past the marble workers, mosaic makers, framers and antique dealers still working in its streets. The concierge can also arrange lunch behind the doors of a private Roman residence, museums and palaces opened privately after dark, and lunch at a country residence outside the city.
