MG Road is loud right up to the gate, and then you turn in under a porte-cochère with green trailers spilling off every balcony above it. Inside there are 3 horseshoe arches, a marble floor and a lit fountain pool, and past them a courtyard with a rain tree in it that was here long before the hotel was. The building is arranged in an L around the tree. Once the door closes you cannot hear the road.
Every room here has a balcony, and yours looks either into the rain tree's canopy or out over the cantonment's green. At dusk the tree is lit from below and goes black against a violet sky. The balconies on the facing wing come up gold one by one. Behind you the room — dark timber, louvred shutters, cobalt and gold — is quiet and warm.
Service here is fast, well-drilled and almost invisible. The car is announced before you have finished asking for it. The table at Rim Naam that was full is somehow not. What makes it work is the size of the place: it is small enough that the staff know who you are by the second morning. The tree was here first, and the building has arranged itself around that fact ever since.
The Rain Tree. Older than the hotel, lit from beneath after dark, and the reason the building is shaped the way it is. Breakfast is laid under it; the balconies on both wings look into it.
The Pool. At the garden end, palms on one side and the lit guest wing behind. Shaded through the afternoon, quiet, and at its best at dusk.
A Balcony on Every Room. Every room has one, from the entry room up, looking either into the rain tree's canopy or out over the cantonment's green.
The Oberoi Spa. Ayurvedic and Western treatments in a small, quiet set of rooms. People who live in Bengaluru book it as often as guests do.
The building is shaped around a tree older than the hotel, and the rooms are really a description of where you stand in relation to it. Floors 2 to 4 look into the canopy. Floors 5 to 7 sit at the crown, where the lighting comes on beneath you at dusk. Floor 8 sits above the tree line, looking over the city instead. The middle band is the one to book, and it is not the most expensive.
Not a suite privilege and not a category — every room here has one.
The step from a Luxury Room to a Premier Room with Private Balcony is not indoor-outdoor access. It is height and aspect. Do not pay up expecting to gain a balcony you already have.
The Deluxe Suite and the Executive Suite add a separate sitting room, which matters if you are here for a working week rather than 2 nights.
The Presidential Suite is mostly booked as a residence, by people staying weeks rather than nights. On a short stay, the money is better spent on the floor than on the extra room.

The second room up, and the same 32 square metres as the Deluxe Room below it, with the balcony looking out over the city's tree cover instead of across the garden. A cane-backed armchair at the writing desk, louvred timber wardrobes along one wall, sliding glass onto green. Low floors, so you are in the canopy rather than above it — which some people prefer and nobody should be talked out of.

Rain tree courtyard
The room most people come here for. It is 43 square metres on the courtyard side, floors 5 to 7, where the canopy is at eye level and the window is filled edge to edge with the rain tree. A bronze headboard, a gold quilted throw, cobalt pillows. The courtyard is lit from beneath at dusk, and that is worth the step up on its own.

The first room here with a separate sitting room: cane chairs around a low glass table, a blue-bordered rug, and the balcony doors opening off it into the rain tree's branches. The bedroom sits behind, so the balcony belongs to the sitting room rather than to the bed. It is 70 square metres, and it is the right room for a stay of more than 3 nights.

Above the canopy rather than inside it, which changes the room entirely: full-height glass, a balcony looking out over the tree line to the city, and a living room laid out for the meeting that would be awkward in a bedroom. A sofa and armchairs around a glass table, a dining end that seats 4, and 70 square metres on the 8th floor.

Over the tree line
The top of the house: a drawing room under a crystal chandelier, a dining table for 6 by the window, and one landscape oil on a wall nobody has otherwise touched. Restrained rather than gilded, and at 111 square metres it does not need to announce anything.
