The measure was born at a friendly polo match in the early 1900s, and it took the Maharaja of Patiala's name with it.
He was known for his taste and for the scale on which he lived, and the size of the glass is the part that outlasted him.
What survives is not only the pour but the manner of it: a generous glass, shared, and no hurry about it. That is the Patialan idea of hospitality, and it is still the working rule here.
