Rambagh began as a garden house in 1835, became a Maharaja's residence, then a hotel, and the rooms still show those layers.
Palace Room, King Bed and Palace Room, Twin Bed are the even, quiet end of it: 46 square metres, hand-painted walls, a marble bathroom, and windows onto the gardens or the courtyard.
Historical Suite is one of the named apartments the family lived in, restored with its frescoes and its verandah in place. The rooms are the easier stay; the suites have the history, and the quirks that come with it.
A Historical Suite is a particular apartment, not one of a set. The Mountbatten and the Pothikhana have different ceilings, different light and different views over the 47 acres. Say which one you want when you book. They are not handed out on arrival like a standard room.
Almost everything here looks onto the formal Mughal garden, and the peacocks are loud at dawn, in the best possible way. Rooms on the first floor sit above the parterres and see the whole garden laid out below. Ground-level rooms sit inside it instead. Neither view is better — one is a plan seen from above, the other is a place to walk out into before breakfast.

The Maharaja's own apartment: 167 square metres at the front of the palace, looking down the length of the lawn. It is the view in the photographs of Man Singh II, taken from roughly where the sofa now is. Two reception rooms, a dining room, a dressing room, and a bathroom plumbed in 1931 and maintained rather than modernised. There are two of these, and in the season there is effectively one.

There are 5 of these in the whole palace, and the step up from a Historical Suite is not simply more floor — it is ceiling height, and the windows that come with it. The sitting room takes light from two sides, the bedroom has a dressing room rather than a wardrobe, and the plasterwork overhead was done by hand for this room and no other. Gardens on one side or the marble courtyard on the other; the concierge will tell you which is quieter in the week you are coming.

Two in the house, at 139 square metres each, and they were a private apartment rather than guest rooms. You can read that in the layout: rooms open into rooms rather than off a corridor, and there is a dining table where a hotel would have put a second bed. Silver-leaf ceilings, a bathroom in Makrana marble, and windows the full height of the wall onto the gardens.
