The gate is unmarked from the lane outside — old sandstone walls the same colour as everything else in the quarter, no drive and no portico. Inside, 4 historic buildings and 3 new ones are set around a single courtyard and a long pool, each one placed so a fresh angle of Mehrangarh Fort appears between them. The fort has stood on its cliff since the 15th century, 400 feet above the rooftops, and from the courtyard it is the one constant: every corner turned finds it again, closer or further off, lit gold by evening. A small 18th-century temple sits at one side of the courtyard, and the stables that once held horses are alcoves for reading now.
Every grade looks out at the same fort in a different way. Luxury Room and Garden Room take it from a private balcony or a walled garden; Duplex Suite and Heritage Suite climb higher, with a shaded sit-out or a courtyard of their own; and Stepwell Suite, the only one of its kind, is perched directly above the 18th-century stepwell the house is named for, with the fort and the blue-washed rooftops on every side of it. At dusk the sandstone goes from pink to a deep rust, the fort's own floodlights come on across the valley, and the jaali screens patterning every balcony throw a lattice of shadow across the floor as the sun drops behind the old town.
The hotel is 40 rooms and suites, small enough that nothing here runs on a schedule a guest has to learn. A jeweller's boutique sits inside the property's own walls, one of the few signs that this quarter of Jodhpur has always done business as well as lived in it. What the staff are actually good at is the walled city itself — the stepwell down the lane, the fort above, the old town's own workshops — because none of it is more than a short walk from the gate.

Set over 3 storeys above a stepwell in the old city, the café serves European and Indian food for lunch and dinner, alongside coffee, tea and cocktails. It can be reached from the square outside or through a private door from inside the hotel, so the room and the street both arrive at the same table.
The Pool. A pool cut into pale stone at the centre of the courtyard, the old sandstone buildings on one side and Mehrangarh Fort rising behind them. Cushioned daybeds run along one edge under canvas awnings, screened from the courtyard by a wall of ivy.
The Spa, With Ma Earth. Set into the same restored sandstone as the heritage suites — carved Rajput arches, stone basins, treatment rooms lit by candle rather than electric light. The programme, run with Ma Earth, is built around herbal compresses, warmed oils and salt scrubs rather than a printed list of treatments.
A Boutique Inside the Walls. A jeweller's shop sits inside the property itself, one of the few working reminders that this quarter of the old city has always done business as well as lived in it.
What Every Room Has. Free wi-fi, a minibar, a Nespresso machine, a tea and coffee maker, an electronic or laptop safe, air-conditioning and heating, and a curated range of toiletries in every bathroom. A baby cot is available on request in every grade, and the house never prices one.
Luxury Room is 45 square metres, with a private balcony that faces Mehrangarh Fort across the old town.
Garden Room is also 45 square metres, with its own walled garden and outdoor seating in place of the fort view. Both take 2 guests in 1 bed, and the choice between them is the outlook, not the space.
Duplex Suite is 68 square metres, a bedroom loft reached by its own staircase above a separate living room and a shaded balcony. It is built for a family or a group who want a room to spread into rather than one to simply sleep in.
Heritage Suite is 107 square metres, inside the sandstone buildings the original 18th-century haveli was restored from, rather than the newer red sandstone blocks. It has a day-bed room off the bedroom that takes a cot on request, though it is sold for 2 guests.
Stepwell Suite is 116 square metres, the only grade with a separate children's room and a kitchenette, and it takes 2 adults and 2 children. It sits directly above the 18th-century stepwell the house is named for, with the fort and the old town on every side of it.
