Claridge's stands on the corner of Brook Street and Davies Street in Mayfair. The building began life in 1856 and became an art deco landmark through the 1920s, and the entrance still opens onto a black-and-white chequered marble floor, classical columns and crystal chandeliers. Every suite from Mayfair Suite upward comes with a butler, there to greet you when you arrive and on call around the clock after that.
The Observatory keeps an antique telescope trained on the London skyline, and a private steam room that looks down on the cobbles of Brook's Mews. Bryan O'Sullivan's interiors hold European antiques, rugs drawn from Christian Bérard, and a cocktail bar where a mixologist will make the drinks in the suite. The terrace runs off the living room, above Mayfair's rooftops.
A concierge team works from the lobby, arranging theatre tickets, restaurant bookings and transport at any hour, and in-room dining runs to match. The butler packs and unpacks, polishes shoes, presses and launders, and coordinates the day's plans; in the Signature Suites, stays of 5 nights or more add a massage and a traditional afternoon tea. A helicopter transfer into Battersea can be arranged from the private terminals at Luton, Stansted, Farnborough or Biggin Hill, on the 8 largest suites, with 72 hours' notice.
Claridge's Spa. A heated pool, a steam room, separate saunas in each changing suite, and a connected gym with NOHrD, PENT and Peloton equipment and personal trainers on call, in the gym or in the room. The Pink Room takes the hammam onto a heated pink onyx bed: an aromatic steam, a charcoal detox, a Kese mitt exfoliation and a body mask. Access to the pool and the sauna is included on every stay.
Art Deco Throughout. Victorian grandeur and pure art deco sit side by side: a Chihuly chandelier hangs in the Foyer, and every room and suite is dressed in a traditional or an art deco register, down to custom-made brassware in the bathrooms.
Claridge's Flowers. A working florist on Brook's Mews, next door to the bakery. Through the window the central table is in motion all day, bouquets gathered and wrapped; the same team does the flowers standing in the hotel and the posies waiting in the rooms. The workshop runs evening floristry masterclasses as well.
Getting Around. Heathrow is about 50 minutes away by car, Gatwick about 90. Bond Street station is a 5-minute walk on the Central and Jubilee lines, and Oxford Circus a 10-minute walk on the Central, Bakerloo and Victoria lines. A chauffeured car can be arranged, and the 8 largest suites add a helicopter transfer into Battersea.
In-Room Dining. Breakfast in bed, a light lunch or a late-night plate, brought to any room or suite. A Surrenne menu of nutritionist-designed dishes runs alongside the full kitchen menu.
Superior Room is 35 square metres, the smallest room in the house.
Mayfair Room is 40 and Claridge's Room 50, and each has a balcony version: Mayfair Balcony Room at 45, with a balcony over the Mayfair streets, and Claridge's Balcony Room at 55, with one over the rooftops. All 5 come in a traditional or an art deco interior, and all but the smallest take twin beds instead of the king.
Claridge's Studio is 60 square metres, one room with a walk-in wardrobe.
Deluxe Junior Suite is 65, a separate one-bedroom layout with original fireplaces.
Terrace Junior Suite is also 65, the same layout with a private furnished terrace added.
Mayfair Suite is 80 square metres and Claridge's Suite 95, each with a separate sitting room and an original fireplace.
