Hotel Cipriani, A Belmond Hotel

On the tip of Giudecca, across the water from St Mark's Square and reached only by boat, with gardens, a vineyard and a pool that was only ever meant to be half this size.

Hotel Cipriani sits at the tip of Giudecca, the long island across the water from St Mark's Square, and the only way in is by boat. The hotel's own launch meets guests at Marco Polo airport or at Santa Lucia station and crosses the lagoon to a private dock — about 30 minutes from the airport, 20 from the station, and 5 minutes from St Mark's Square itself. Giuseppe Cipriani built the hotel in 1956 for the jet set of the day; it opened two years later, and the guest book's first entry, from the French actress Martine Carol, reads: 'I've travelled 3 times around the world, but this is where I want to stay.' The garden runs around the pink façade on every side it faces, and the crossing is still how most people first understand the place — the city recedes, and does not return until the boat pulls back out.

19 room grades run from Superior Rooms at 23 square metres to the 188-square-metre Serenissima Suite, and the ladder divides less by size than by where a room sits — over the pool, over the lagoon, over the hotel's own vineyard, or across in Palazzo Vendramin looking straight at St Mark's Square. The 4 Signature Suites carry a dedicated host or butler and their own stocked bar regardless of the grade below them, and Palladio alone has a private plunge pool on its terrace. Every room, whichever grade, takes a choice of one king bed or two twins, and up to 2 extra beds go into most of them on request. Fortuny fabrics and Coromandel screens survive from the hotel's earliest years in Palazzo Vendramin, while marble and terrazzo elsewhere were reworked by the architect Peter Marino.

Every stay includes the shuttle boat to St Mark's Square, a daily newspaper and one complimentary activity a week, drawn from a running list that includes a gondola tour, a Bacaro crawl through the city's bars, a sunrise walk up the Scalinata steps, and a morning at the hotel's own island vineyard. Pets under 10 kilograms are welcome throughout, room service runs 24 hours with breakfast delivered at no charge, and the concierge arranges everything from a private water taxi to a table at any of the 6 restaurants and bars on site.

The house

Chef Vania Ghedini runs the kitchen under Massimo Bottura's culinary direction, in a room the architect Peter Marino redesigned around the lagoon outside its own windows. Dinner runs a 7-course tasting menu or à la carte, built from lagoon ingredients with a Moroccan thread running through it — Ghedini spent several years cooking there before returning to Italy. Il Porticciolo sits on a terrace by the lagoon, a few steps from the pool, serving Italian food that ranges well past Venice — pizza, salads, pasta and the grill sit on the same card. It's the easy, unstarched option against Oro's evening formality, open for a late breakfast, lunch through the afternoon and dinner from Wednesday to Saturday.

Cip's Club

Bar Gabbiano sits beside the pool and runs from mid-morning through to the small hours, the social centre of the hotel by daylight and a live-music room after dark. Its Bellini is the original: Giuseppe Cipriani mixed the first one here in 1948, naming it for the pink in a Giovanni Bellini painting, and the bar still makes it only in season, with fresh white peaches.

What is here

The Pool
A mix-up between feet and metres, when the pool was first built, left it considerably bigger than planned — the hotel kept the mistake, and it's now the busiest stretch of ground on Giudecca by mid-morning. Heated and filtered with seawater, it runs the length of the lawn between the main building and the water, with cabanas, sun loungers and a poolside bar built around it. Bar Gabbiano and Il Porticciolo both sit right on the deck, so a swim, a Bellini and lunch can all happen without moving far.
Casanova Gardens
The Casanova Gardens run behind the pool toward the hotel's own working vineyard, roses trained along a grass path between the rows and a copper beech closing the view at the far end. The vineyard's own fruit goes into a seasonal Vineyard Dinner, laid either in the gardens or under a pergola among the vines, and a red-clay tennis court — the only one on Giudecca — sits nearby, reserved for guests alone.
Dior Spa
The Dior Spa sits inside the gardens, treatment rooms finished in backlit onyx and stone, treatments built around Dior's own rituals. A state-of-the-art fitness centre with garden views runs alongside it, open around the clock with personal trainers on hand for anyone who wants one.
Island Days
A running list of complimentary activities changes by the week — a gondola tour, a walk through the Jewish Quarter, a Bacaro crawl through the city's bars, sunrise on the Scalinata steps, and a morning at the hotel's own island vineyard among them. Cycling and yoga run alongside the paid excursions, and the concierge can put together a private itinerary beyond the printed list.
Celebrations
Weddings, anniversaries and full hotel takeovers all run through the hotel's own event spaces — the Longhi and Tiziano ballrooms indoors, and the Fondamenta Terrace, the San Giorgio Terrace and the Casanova Gardens outside, the largest of them holding up to 340 guests in the Granaries of the Republic. Two further gardens and a terrace look out toward St Mark's Square, and the events team plans everything from an intimate anniversary dinner to a takeover of the whole property.

In-Room Dining, Any Hour. Room service runs 24 hours, and breakfast delivered to the room carries no extra charge. Signature Suites come with their own stocked minibar and coffee machine on top of that, and the desk can arrange a candlelit dinner or a private meal laid wherever a guest would rather eat it.

Signature Suites: which of the 4

Laguna Suite is 182 square metres, the biggest room in the hotel and the only one with a canopy bed and two full bathrooms.

Serenissima Suite is 188, run through with Murano chandeliers and 4 French balconies over the water.

Palladio Suite is 108, the only one with its own plunge pool on a private terrace.

Dogaressa Suite is 122, alone in Palazzo Vendramin across the garden, with the clearest view of St Mark's Square of any room here.

Sophia Suite is 85 to 103 square metres, the largest of the 7.

Serenity Suite is 55 to 65.

San Giorgio Suite is 70 to 96, most with a balcony or terrace of their own.

Superior Suite is 61 to 64, in Palazzo Vendramin rather than the main building.

Vigneto Suite is 59 to 62, facing the hotel's own vineyard.

Suite Lagoon View with Balcony is 50 to 59. St Mark's View Suite is 61 to 74, the one suite grade looking straight across to the Doge's Palace.

Junior suites: by the pool or over the water

Villeggiatura Junior Suite is 38 to 50 square metres, right beside the pool with direct access to it.

Junior Suite Poolside with Patio is 38 to 59, the same pool but a private patio in front of it rather than direct access.
