It takes over Sala Colonne, which is something else for the other 46 weeks of the year.

Everything on the counter is made by hand, in Villa d'Este's own kitchens.

Pastry is sold over the counter as well as served at a table, and the boutique keeps going for a while after the tables have been cleared.

The particulars

When: Table service 2 to 8 in the evening; the pastry boutique stays open until 10. Afternoon tea 3 to 6.
Season: Open 27 November to 6 January.
Dress: Smart casual by day; casual elegant, cocktail attire from 6 in the evening, with long trousers and closed-toe shoes for gentlemen at dinner.
Tables: Worth booking
