The hotel opened in 1965, shut for 2 years to be taken back to its frame, and reopened in January 2018. Adam Tihany did the interiors and started from Lutyens: long sightlines, pale stone, dark timber, and a Tree of Life worked across the lobby. The address is what people book. On one side is Humayun's Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; on the other is the Delhi Golf Course. Two of the largest quiet spaces in central Delhi sit on either side of this building, and neither of them can be built on.
There are 220 rooms, 34 of them suites, and every one faces the tomb or the course. That is the whole design: the rebuild was organised around those two views. The rooms are quiet inside — Lutyens-shaped furniture, teak underfoot, Italian marble in the bathroom, an oak desk from the Premier Room up. The windows are triple-glazed and the doors are sound-insulated, and on a road this size you notice that within a minute. Air is filtered throughout the building, which in Delhi matters more than it would anywhere else. At half past 5 the light comes off the golf course flat and low and the dome across the road holds it for a while.
A butler comes with every room here, from the Deluxe Room up, and so does room service around the clock. Laundry comes back the next day, and the papers arrive in the morning.
Asmi by Oberoi. Asmi is built on 5 things: movement, nutrition, bodywork, breathwork and mindfulness. Off that come massage, Indian Ayurvedic therapy, facials and the longer skin programmes. It is open from 7 in the morning until half past 9 at night, it takes resident guests only, and it wants 24 hours' notice.
The Pools. There are 2 pools, one in the garden and one indoors under a slatted timber ceiling. The water is held between 26 and 28 degrees, so January is swimmable, and the 22.5-metre pool is open from sunrise to sunset.
The Fitness Centre. Open 24 hours, for resident guests, with a trainer available at any hour of it.
The Deluxe Room and the Luxury Room are both 33 square metres and both take a king or twin beds.
The Luxury Room is the one on the higher floors, and it adds a mirrored wall, a frosted-glass bathroom and a larger screen. Same floor area, same beds, a different height above the golf course.
The Premier Room is 51 square metres, with a king bed and an oak writing desk.
The Premier Plus Room is the same 51 square metres with the Residents' Lounge attached, and the lounge is the only difference — open 11 in the morning until 11 at night, and closed to everybody below it.
The Oberoi Suite is 67 square metres — a master bedroom and a living area, and it will interconnect with a Premier Plus Room if you need a second bedroom.
The Deluxe Suite is 130, and it is the first with a balcony, a pantry, a powder room and return airport transfers.
The Luxury Suite is 167, adds a dining room, and some of them are done in Victorian or Art Deco rather than the house style.
The Kohinoor Suite is 325 square metres, with a study, a therapy room and a gym of its own. The Residents' Lounge comes with every suite.
Two of the largest quiet spaces in central Delhi sit on either side of this building, and neither of them can be built on.
