A hotel on the Chao Phraya since 1876, its first building now the Authors' Wing, and a spa reached by boat across the river.

The original Oriental Hotel building at dusk, cream colonial facade lit gold behind a garden of tall palms, with the hotel's modern tower rising softly lit behind it.

Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok opened on the Chao Phraya in 1876 as The Oriental Hotel. That first building is now the Authors' Wing, and the Garden Wing and the River Wing have grown up around it; Jeffrey Wilkes redesigned the River Wing in Thai craft and contemporary comfort. The hotel holds 331 rooms, 60 of them suites. The lobby runs the length of the ground floor under tiered brass and glass chandeliers, patterned rugs underfoot and a wall of glass at the far end onto the garden. Writers have stayed here since the 1800s, and their photographs still hang along the staircase of the room named for them.

The building decides most of it. Garden Wing rooms look over the river and the garden, and come flat or split-level. River Wing rooms and suites turn between the river, the pool and the city skyline. Above the standard rooms, Junior Terrace Suite adds a terrace of its own, and Siam, Selandia, Ambassador and Oriental each take a distinct part of the building — a top floor, the original 1876 house, a private lift. At the top, Royal Suite runs to 306 square metres in the Authors' Wing, its own 3 arched doors opening onto a private garden terrace above the river.

Every room carries 24-hour butler service. The Little Fan's Club runs for children of 3 to 12, Friday to Sunday, and The Verandah and Sala Rim Naam both keep a children's menu. The Royal Ballroom divides into smaller function rooms, with a wedding and events team of its own.

The house

The lobby's long gallery, hung with tiered brass and glass chandeliers over green and blue patterned rugs, guests seated on gold and green armchairs beside floor-to-ceiling windows onto the garden.

Le Normandie opened in 1958 and became Bangkok's first true fine-dining room in 1969. Anne-Sophie Pic took over the kitchen, and it holds 2 Michelin stars under her. Her cooking runs French technique through Thai ingredients — a lobster dashi finished with red fruit, a wagyu course built on Thai black garlic.

Once the home of Phraya Mahai Savan and Khunying Luean Mahai Savan, this teakwood house on the river's far bank has been restored and reopened under Chef Phatchara 'Pom' Pirapak, who revives regional and royal Thai recipes with her own light touch. The building's own fretwork and teak survive from its earliest days, when it also served for a time as Thailand's first Thai cooking school.

The Authors' Lounge sits on the ground floor of the original 1876 hotel building, furnished in wicker and hand-painted fabric in a style that has not changed much since the turn of the last century. Framed photographs of the writers who stayed here through the decades hang along its walls, and the traditional afternoon tea of finger sandwiches, pastries and scones is what the room is known for.

What is here

The Oriental Spa. The spa is across the river, a short boat ride from the hotel: a Thai house with 18 treatment rooms, open daily from 10 in the morning until 8 at night, drawing on Thai healing, Chinese medicine and contemporary therapy. The minimum age for the spa and the Fitness & Wellness Centre is 16, and children of 6 to 15 can be treated in a couple's room with a parent or guardian present and signed consent. Come 20 minutes before a first appointment; a cancellation inside 24 hours is charged in full.

The Fitness & Wellness Centre. A full floor of cardio and strength equipment open daily from 6 in the morning until 10 at night, with a recovery studio for a cold plunge and an infrared sauna, and a Muay Thai and boxing studio alongside it. The Yoga House, Baan Noi, runs Hatha, Vinyasa and restorative classes in its own garden pavilion, and personal and family training sessions can be arranged through the concierge.

The Pools and the Garden. The garden between the wings holds 2 outdoor pools, open daily from 6 in the morning until 8 at night. Alongside them are 2 tennis courts, bookable in advance, and the garden itself runs down toward the river with mature palms throughout.

The Little Fan's Club. A riverside children's club for ages 3 to 12, open Fridays to Sundays from 10 in the morning until 6 at night, with children under 3 welcome alongside a parent or guardian. The programme runs to arts and crafts, origami and storytelling, and both The Verandah and Sala Rim Naam keep a children's menu for the rest of the day.

The River, and Getting Across It. A complimentary shuttle boat runs to IconSiam every 30 minutes, and a one-way service to Sathorn Pier can be arranged on request. Sala Rim Naam, Terrace Rim Naam, Baan Phraya and The Oriental Spa all sit on the river's far bank, reached the same way. From the hotel's own pier, a morning trip up the Chao Phraya past its temples and markets to the Grand Palace can be arranged through the concierge, as can a sunset cruise.

Room service runs 24 hours, on a menu of Thai and international dishes held to the same standard as the restaurants.

Siam One-Bedroom Suite, Selandia Two-Bedroom Suite and Oriental Two-Bedroom Suite are on the top floor.

Ambassador Two-Bedroom Suite and Royal Suite are inside the original 1876 building.

Deluxe Premier Room comes with a king bed or twin beds, and so does each half of Deluxe Premier Connecting Room.

Premier Two-Bedroom Suite pairs a king bedroom with a twin bedroom.

A terrace of its own

Junior Terrace Suite is the first with a terrace of its own, 17 square metres over the river and the city.

Oriental Two-Bedroom Suite is wrapped by 58 square metres of terrace on the top floor.

Deluxe Premier Room, Chao Phraya Room and Deluxe Premier Connecting Room have no outdoor space of their own, and Ambassador Two-Bedroom Suite has a glass conservatory instead. Every other grade has a balcony or a terrace.

The Royal Suite's central living room, an ornate plasterwork ceiling and a crystal chandelier over cream and sage sofas, 3 arched French doors open onto a private garden terrace.

The Oriental Two-Bedroom Suite's bedroom, a gilded pineapple-topped four-poster bed in mustard and grey, glass doors open to a wraparound terrace over the city.
