Bvlgari's 8th hotel starts on the 40th floor of the Tokyo Midtown Yaesu tower, and if you come by train you walk in straight from the Yaesu South Exit of Tokyo Station. By car, you pull in over sanpietrino paving stones, one of the pieces of the Roman jeweller's heritage worked into the building. On the 40th floor, an 8-point star marks the entrance vestibule. The hotel's emblem is a 1970 Bvlgari brooch with Mount Fuji on it, and from these floors the real mountain is part of the view. So is the Imperial Palace, and Ginza, Nihombashi and Marunouchi are all close enough to walk to. Before you go to your room, sit by the fireplace in The Bvlgari Lounge, on the same floor, and order tea.
A Deluxe Room has one wall of glass from floor to ceiling, and in the evening the city skyline fills it. A Premium Room is the same size but looks down on Tokyo Station and across to the Imperial Palace Gardens, and it is soundproofed. In the Deluxe Suites, on the corners of the tower, the ceiling over you is hand-brushed matte gold. In every room the fabrics are by Hosoo, an old kimono-textile maker in Kyoto, and the wood furniture is by Ritzwell of Fukuoka. Before dinner, make a cup of the tea in the room: organic leaves from Kitano Chaen in Ureshino, the town known as the birthplace of Japanese tea, grown without pesticides.
Staff will unpack your cases when you arrive and pack them again when you leave. A barber and a tailor can be arranged, and so can a shoeshine, through the hotel's partnership with Maison Berluti.

Niko Romito wrote the menu and trained the chef who cooks it, Mauro Aloisio, and the room has held its star every year since it opened. The cooking is light and exact, and much of the produce is Japanese: Ise-ebi lobster, sea urchin, Miyazaki Wagyu. Children under 12 are seated only if they are staying at the hotel.

The room is built around a huge cast-iron-and-granite fireplace, with wood-panelled walls and a coffered ceiling, and it opens onto the terrace. Afternoon tea is served from 11.30 in the morning until 7.15 in the evening, and after 7 there is a savoury afternoon tea.
The Bvlgari Spa, and the Spa Suite. The spa takes up 1,800 square metres of the 40th floor, and the pool is part of it. There are 9 treatment rooms, 2 of them doubles. For a couple, book the Spa Suite: it has treatment beds for two and a hydromassage tub clad in Iranian green onyx. Products are by Augustinus Bader, and there is a hyperbaric oxygen chamber as well. Treatments run from 10 in the morning until 10 at night, and the spa is for guests 16 and over.
Bvlgari Gymnasivm. Bvlgari Gymnasivm is run with Technogym. Start with the Technogym Checkup, an hour-long assessment of physical and cognitive health that gives you a Wellness Age and a training programme you can open on your own devices. On-demand workouts play in your room, too. The gym is for guests 16 and over.
Bvlgari Dolci. Bvlgari Il Cioccolato opened in Tokyo in 2007, and this is where its chocolate gems are sold: handmade from local, seasonal ingredients, with limited editions through the year. Niko Romito's pastries are here to take away as well, among them cannolo siciliano, profiteroles and an almond-chocolate cake after a sweet from Capri, with jams, nectars and juices from Laboratorio Niko Romito.
The Ballrooms and the Terrace Room. The hotel's 3 ballrooms are on the 40th floor, with triple-height ceilings, crystal light fixtures shaped like half stars, and a carpet patterned on the floor of the Pantheon in Rome. The Terrace Room is 88 square metres, with a diamond-cut pattern on its ceiling and back wall and an outdoor terrace over the skyline, and it can be set up as a chapel. Ceremonies can also be held outside on the rooftop terrace. The hotel hosts one wedding a day, for up to 80 guests, with menus by Niko Romito. For meetings, 2 boardrooms sit in the north wing.
Getting Here. The Narita Express runs from Narita to Tokyo Station in 53 minutes, and the hotel is reached directly from the station's Yaesu South Exit. A taxi takes about 100 minutes from Narita and about 40 from Haneda. On the Tokyo Metro, Kyobashi Station on the Ginza Line is a 3-minute walk, and Nihonbashi Station is a 6-minute walk.
