The room is archways and domes.
For the first half of the day nothing lights it but what comes through the arches. After sunset the glass lamps take over. The gardens are on one side and Lake Pichola behind them, with nothing built in between.
Afternoon tea comes 2 ways. The Royal is Indian: morels on wheat crisps, an onion kachori under braised lamb, pistachio dumplings at the end. The Victorian is scones with clotted cream, cucumber sandwiches and a lemon profiterole. Each is laid vegetarian or with meat and seafood, and both run from 4 until 6.
There are 9 wines by the glass, from Nashik to the Mosel, and as many champagnes again — down to a Dom Pérignon Rosé from 2006. The classics sit on the same card as the signatures.
