Taj Fateh Prakash Palace

The airport is 50 minutes away, and the last 10 minutes are the ones that matter. The road narrows into the old city, the lanes close in, and then the gates of the City Palace open and you are inside the 450-year-old residence of the rulers of Mewar — the largest palace in Rajasthan, and a working museum the city walks through every day. You do not arrive at this hotel so much as you are admitted to it. Past the courtyards the ground drops away to the west and the whole of Lake Pichola opens at once, with the Taj Lake Palace floating in the middle of it and Jagmandir beyond. The palace front here is cream stucco and jharokha balconies stepping down to a white marble terrace at the water, and a domed chhatri stands in the shallow end of the pool with its own reflection under it. Maharana Fateh Singh built this wing to house the guests of his court. It is still doing that, and the family whose house it is has never moved out.

The rooms face two ways, and the name says which: Lake View or Courtyard View. On the lake side the jharokha arch is the whole event — a cushioned window ledge set into a scalloped opening, and as the light goes the water runs from silver to brass to a flat deep pewter while the Lake Palace lights come on out in the middle of it. Inside, it is marble underfoot, pale blue and cream panelling, a carved timber bedhead, and the miniature paintings and toshakhana furniture the palace already owned. On the courtyard side you look into the palace instead — its own courts below you and the older carved stone rising over the roofline, which is a different kind of quiet and a good deal more of it. No two rooms here are alike. That is what happens when you build a hotel inside a palace rather than the other way round.

There is no service philosophy here, only a list of things people do. Palace hosting, a butler on request, and heritage storytelling — someone whose job is to walk you through the building and tell you what you are looking at. In-room dining runs around the clock, and there is a doctor on call at any hour. You get about by boat as often as by car, off the palace's own steps, with chauffeur-driven cars and a travel desk for everything the water cannot reach. The event side is half of what a palace is for: 9 spaces, from a pair of Durbar Halls to 6 small meeting rooms named after gemstones, and an island out in the lake.
