Capella Bangkok

A low-rise sanctuary on a bend of the Chao Phraya, where the river fills almost every window in the house.

Capella Bangkok sits on a bend of the Chao Phraya on Charoenkrung Road, Bangkok's first paved road, built by order of King Rama IV in 1861 and now the heart of the city's creative arts district. The building is deliberately low-rise, 101 rooms, suites and villas in all, most of them with a full view of the river. A Capella Culturist meets every arriving guest and stays on call for the whole stay, from a private meditation session with the head monk of a 250-year-old temple to the dishes worth ordering at Jay Fai, the Michelin-starred street-food stall.

At 6 in the evening the Verandah's terrace is where to be: a sala at one end, the jacuzzi plunge pool at the other, and the whole width of the Chao Phraya turning gold in front of both. The room behind it is 137 square metres on the third floor, a king bed facing the glass, a bath and a rain shower, a walk-in wardrobe with 5 pieces of pressing already done. Dinner can be a barbecue set out on the verandah as the river traffic passes below.

One person, the Capella Culturist, runs the stay from arrival to departure. Villa and Presidential Villa add a round-trip limousine, a jet-lag treatment on arrival and a daily aperitif service; every room gets a non-alcoholic minibar restocked daily and 5 pieces of pressing on arrival.

What is here

Auriga Wellness. 7 treatment suites, 2 of them built for couples, set in a garden by the river. Massage, body and facial rituals draw on Thai, Chinese, Indian and European traditions alongside Biologique Recherche's medispa treatments, including the ancient Tok Sen hammer massage. Water therapy, a steam room and a sauna sit beside the treatment rooms, open every day from 10 in the morning until 10 at night.

The Living Room. The day starts and ends here. In the morning, guests meet their Culturist to go over the day's plan and pick up a few words of Thai; in the evening the room opens onto a terrace for drinks. A temple monk leads sessions in mindfulness here, and local experts teach flower-garland weaving and Thai musical instruments.

Little Stars, for Children. Children find a teepee, a bathrobe and slippers in their size waiting in the room, and a Little Stars programme of activities built for them. Babysitting can be arranged.

Getting Around. A complimentary shuttle boat runs to IconSiam and the Saphan Taksin pier for the Skytrain. A limousine and a VIP fast-track service can be arranged for Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang airport with 24 hours' notice, and the Culturist handles any other transfer.

A House for Families and Pets. One dog of up to 10 kilograms is welcome per room, though not left unattended and not brought into the pool, Auriga Wellness or any dining room except Phra Nakhon. Rooms are for accommodation only — no gatherings or parties.

Capella Suite is 153, with a wraparound balcony over both the river and the pool.

Verandah and Verandah Suite share the same third floor and the same private terrace, a sala and a jacuzzi plunge pool built into it.

Verandah is 137 square metres, with one bedroom.

Verandah Suite is 209, with a separate living room besides.

2 Bedroom Family Courtyard Suite adds a second king bedroom to Courtyard Suite, running 162 square metres.

2 Bedroom Family River Suite adds a second bedroom of 2 double beds to River Suite, at 156.
