The airport is 45 minutes away, and the drive climbs into the Aravalli Hills to Sisarma, on the edge of Girwa, about 10 kilometres from the centre of Udaipur. There is also a helipad on site. The gate is a fort gate, Raj Dwaar, and past it the drive opens onto a domed lobby lit by a crystal chandelier built for the space. It is the first sign of scale in a palace of 327 rooms and suites, and off the lobby stands the Jewel Ballroom, one of the largest in Rajasthan. The stepwell in the grounds is older than the palace built around it. At night candles line the stepwell the whole way down, and one table is laid at the bottom of it.
Every room takes its shape from Mewar design, in custom furnishings and warm tones, and in a few suites a domed sitting space set apart from the bed. As the day ends the Aravalli hills run from green to gold outside, and whatever a room is sold with — a balcony, a terrace or a plunge pool — becomes the better half of it. A walk-in shower and bath is standard from the entry grade up; the suites add a separate living room, and the largest of them, Regal Mewar Suite, is 167 square metres, much of it given to that living room.
The concierge arranges transport, tours and dinner reservations around Udaipur. Bellmen are on the door at any hour, housekeeping calls twice a day with a turndown in the evening, and laundry returns the same day with an overnight shoe shine; pressing is on request. Baggage storage costs nothing for guests staying at the hotel.
