At 42 square metres this house stops being careful. The four-poster stands between two white columns under a gold-banded ceiling, and the wall behind and beside it is panelled in chinoiserie — birds, blossom, a great deal of it — running the full length of the room rather than stopping politely above the bed.

Opposite it, a navy velvet Chesterfield and two cream tub chairs stand on a Persian carpet, with a block of engravings hung above the dado. It is a sitting room that happens to contain a bed, rather than a bedroom with a sofa pushed into a corner.

The step from here to the Executive Suite above is much smaller than the step up from the Luxury Room below. If you are staying 4 nights or more and do not need a door between the bed and a guest, stop here.
