Gold in the joinery, silk on the walls, Swarovski crystal in the light, a private terrace onto the beach with nothing between it and the water, a dressing room you could sleep in, a bathroom with a hot tub. All of it across 280 square metres.

Whether that reads as magnificent or as too much depends entirely on the person, and it is worth knowing which you are before you book it. The private tour walks through a Palace Suite, and an hour of that is a cheap way to find out.

The bedroom — a bed under a gilt ceiling rose with a patterned rug beneath it, terrace doors and pierced screens at the left, and a long console and screen down the opposite wall.

The living room: pale sofas and leather tub chairs on a green silk rug beneath a many-armed crystal chandelier, arched windows down the whole far wall and the sea beyond them.
