Underwater Suite

Upstairs is a double-height living and dining room under a coral-branch chandelier, with a pointed arched window the height of both floors looking out over the resort's water. Marble, cream, pale blue chairs, a round dining table, a lounge room off it, a private kitchen and a guest bathroom. It would be a good suite if that were all of it.

Downstairs is the point. A private lift takes you to a level inside the Ambassador Lagoon, where one entire wall of the bedroom and one of the bathroom are glass held against 11 million litres of water. Rays cross it. A shoal of trevally turns and the whole room changes colour. The light on the floor at midday is refracted into bands you can watch move. It is the least restful and most extraordinary room in the building, and there are two of them.

The room

A child with one hand flat on the aquarium wall, three rays and a shoal of trevally on the other side of it, and the water throwing its light in moving patches across the floor of the room.

The bath, a deep stone oval with a floor-standing brass mixer, set directly in front of a second lit panel of the lagoon with rays drifting through it.

A second bathroom in the Underwater Suite: an oval tub set against the same lit aquarium wall, a chrome mixer within reach of the glass, and a marble dressing table with its own arched mirror across the room.

The wrought-iron stair between the suite's 2 levels, its rail set with amber and teal glass, curling down past a carved coral medallion toward the lift doors on the lower floor.
